The prevailing hot weather conditions in Assam and other parts of the North-east have hit the people hard, with five persons reportedly killed due to heat stroke today in different parts of the State. The deaths were reported from Guwahati, Nagaon (2 deaths), Gohpur and Hailakandi. In the city, the district administration has ordered closure of schools in Kamrup (Metro) district on June 13 and 14 in view of the extreme hot weather conditions causing great inconvenience to school-going children. The order was issued by the Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner. The city today recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8 degree Celsius (a departure of seven degrees) and a minimum of 26.5 degree Celsius (a departure of three degrees). The weatherman has forecast a similar day tomorrow, with temperature hovering around 38 degrees. As the city reeled under the sweltering heat for the fifth successive day today, the citizens had a tough time fending off the rapidly-rising mercury level. The city roads and streets were not bustling with the usual crowds and vehicular traffic, as many chose to remain confined to the comfort of indoors. But even that became a difficult proposition due to the frequent hide and seek played by electricity. People outside had a difficult time trying to cope with the heat. Sale of cold drinks, coconut water and ice cream soared, with people visiting the vendors in large numbers. The Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) has predicted that the hot weather condition will continue to affect the North East for at least a couple of days. People, however, are hopeful of getting a burst of shower, as some clouds could be seen dotting the evening city skyline.
