Heat waves claim 6 lives

The continuing heat wave with heat wave claimed six lives in Burdwan and Bankura districts today. Most of the victims were residents of Asansol-Durgapur industrial zone where mercury touched nearly 43 degree Celsius. Gouri Mondal (80), a resident of Taldangra, Bankura was found dead at her courtyard at about 11.30 am today. The doctors said that she died of sunstroke. Mongala Bauri (65), a resident of Gopalmath locality, Durgapur died today while she was returning to his home taking a bath from a nearby pond. Moreover the bodies of two unknown persons aged about 30 years were found lying at Kulti and Asansol town respectively. The bodies have been sent for post mortem. According to Mr Madhusudan Patra, weather officer, Bankura the district recorded 42 degree Celsius at 2.30 pm today. Meanwhile, today the maximum temperature in the city was 36.1 degree Celsius and the maximum temperature yesterday was 39 degree Celsius, a sharp decline by 3.1 degree within a day. Though the temperature in the city remained low compared to yesterday it was still intolerable for the city dwellers because of the presence of strong humid condition. According to the Met Officials the maximum relative humidity has increased today as a result of which people are sweating too much. The maximum relative humidity also increased by 2 percent. From 87 percent it has increased to 89 percent today. "There is no probability of rain or thundershower in the next 24 hours and there is a probability of the rise in humidity,' affirmed a senior Met Official.
