Heatwave claims five more in districts

KOLKATA, 11 JUNE: Today the season's death toll due to heatstroke rose higher, with five more dying as a result of persistent high temperature. In a tribal area in Birbhum, Laxmi Murmu (45) died of a sunstroke as temperatures in the district soared to 45.1 degrees Celsius.
In Purulia, heatwave claimed three lives in the past 24 hours. Bilati Mahato (65), a resident of Tuitar village of Bandwan police station, lost her life at Bandwan health centre due to heatstroke.
Apurva Bauri (45) of Puncha, a vegetables seller, died reportedly due to sunstroke at Punch health centre last night. In another incident, a casual worker of Purulia municipality, Barun Bauri (50), was admitted to Deben Mahato Sadar Hospital last night with sickness reportedly due to extreme heat. He died this morning.
Lakshmikanta Dhak (55), a resident of Bishnupur, died due to heatstroke. He had gone to his in-law’s house in Purulia. He felt uncomfortable last night and doctors referred him to Bokaro. He died on the way.
The peak temperature in Kolkata ~ 38.2 degrees Celsius ~ was slightly lower than the past few days, but the heat kept central Kolkata’s streets deserted at noon.
Some areas in the state experienced rain, such as rural areas in Nadia.
More “sultry and uncomfortable” weather is the forecast for tomorrow, with the possibility of rain in some areas, according to the Meteorological Office. sns
