Based on a report by the Dhubri Deputy Commissioner to the Border Areas Department, the department took up the issue of erosion with the Union Home Ministry. The department sent three anti–erosion schemes worth Rs 2.70 crore (Tistarpar along the Gangadhar river), Rs 7.26 crore (Binnachara along the Gangadhar river) and Rs 1.87 crore (Ghewmari along the Bramaputra river) to the Department of Border Management of the Union Home Ministry last year. But erosion is still going on, and there is no response from the Union Home Ministry. There are some areas along the India–Bangladesh border in Dhubri district that are in a very bad shape because of heavy river erosion due both to the Brahmaputra and Gangadhar rivers. The Union Home Ministry sanctions funds for the development of international borders through a scheme called Border Area Development Programme (BADP), but the ministry seems to be least concerned about the state of affairs in Dhubri district. In the Dhubri Legislative Assembly Constituency, erosion has taken place along the border with Bangladesh mainly in four gaon panchayats — Bhogdahar, Patmari, Gaspara and Binnachara. The border fencing and border outposts in these areas are now facing a serious threat. Dhubri LAC MLA Jahanuddin said that erosion in certain areas of the district along the India–Bangladesh border had been taking place since the last 15 years, but there had been no anti–erosion scheme sanctioned by both the Centre and the State government. ‘‘Border fencing and many border outposts in these areas are facing a grave threat due to heavy erosion. This is also a threat to national security. It is high time that some schemes were sanctioned to face this challenge.’’
