Heavy rain, floods and warning of landslides

With the torrential rain taking its toll affecting several districts including Mannar, Anuradhapura, Badulla and Ratnapura causing heavy floods, the Disaster Management Centre issued landslide warnings in several other areas including the central hills. The Disaster Management Centre quoting the National Building Research Bureau (NBRO) said landslide threat looms in Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Ratnapura, Kegalle and Kalutara Districts. Especially, the areas such as Beragala, Haputale, Ella, Wellawaya, Nuwara Eliya, Gampola, Badulla, Mahiyanganaya, Kandy, Galagedara Road, Haldummulla, Hali Ela and Walapone were running the risk of land slides, the Centre said yesterday. The NBRO scientists in Beragala on the Colombo-Badulla Road who were engaged in investigations have said landslides in the area would be inevitable. In addition, Horana, Hanguranketa, Nagalakanda, Matugama, Agalawatta Bulathsinhala areas were also facing landslide threats, the reports said. It was reported that thousands of acres of paddy fields in Karuwalagasweva have been destroyed by heavy showers. According to the villagers in the area, the paddy which was ready for harvest in the Maha season have been destroyed causing threats to their livelihood. They said this was an unfortunate situation as they were going to be deprived of much needed revenue for the upcoming Sinhala New Year period. Minor floods have been reported from Negombo including Mahahunupitiya, Dalupotha and Kattuwa areas. Over 1,100 families have been displaced in Negombo area according to the Negombo Divisional Secretariat. Over 190 families have been displaced in Mannar and the cultivation of paddy has also been affected. Meanwhile sluice gates of several tanks in North Central and Eastern Provinces were open as they reached the spill level. The water in Kantale Tank was said to have exceeded its capacity of 114,000 cubic feet and it read 117,000 cubic feet. The water flowing into Parakramara Samudra and Nuwara Weva have been successfully diverted to avoid a major disaster. Sluice gates in Rajangane Tank were also opened to prevent it from spilling. Meanwhile Meteorological Department warned of more wet weather during the coming days along with strong winds.
