Hepatitis toll rises to 58

Ahmedabad: The deadly hepatitis-B virus claimed its 58th victim in Meghraj taluka in Sabarkantha on Monday A harried health department has now concentrated its surveillance in Idar taluka as fresh cases have been traced to this area. With this 53 fresh cases have been reported in the last few days, most of them in Sabarkantha. Sixty-two persons were discharged across the state after timely intervention. At least 10 cases have been referred to various hospitals in Ahmedabad. "Of the 64 cases from Idar till now, one person has died, while in Modasa, 102 persons have been infected and 47 have died. We are waiting for reports from National Institute of Virology-Pune and National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi on the outbreak. Since the disease is only transmitted through needles, blood transfusion and sexual contact, the reports would throw light on the reason for this virus to get active during this time. We are also trying to find whether there was a common source responsible for this outbreak," says a senior health official in Gandhinagar. In Ahmedabad a fresh case of hepatitis-B in a 22-year-old woman from Nava Wadaj was brought to civil hospital. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has so far recorded eight cases in the city In city, hepatitis cases came from Bopal, Idgah area in the old city area, Sarangpur, Melavadi Baliya Limbdi area, Sardarnagar, Rakhial Asarwa and Ramapir ni Chali in Vadaj. All these cases were aged between 22 and 60 years.
