A group of scientists of the North-East Institute of Science and Technology (NEISC), formerly known as Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Jorhat, has prepared a safe mosquito repellent in the form of Agarbatti or incense sticks from a harmless bio-product. Most of mosquito repellents currently used for domestic purpose are mainly synthetic products with high mammalian toxicity. They are mostly synthetic pyrethroids. Though they are less harmful then general insecticides, but still are not totally safe for prolonged use, sources said. The group of scientists from NEISC, namely Dr Mantu Bhuyan along with Dr. PR Bhattacharya, Dr. PK Sharma, Dr PB Kanjilal and Dr RK Adikary of MAEP division, made the agarbatti or incense sticks using easily available plants affording products and protections against mosquito bites. It was also stated that the sticks would provide considerable protection up to one hour of burning. The source said that still the commercial production of the repellent has not taken place in Northeast region. However, NEISC has authorised Premier Agro Products, Sivasagar for the commercial production of the product and soon it will be available for domestic use. It may be mentioned that the scientist group had prepared a kind of mosquito repellent in form of incense candle also, which could provide light and odour in night as well as work as a repellent.
