Nellore, Dec. 7: District administration sounded high alert along the coast following forecast over the possibility of low pressure system crossing between Kavali and Bapatla. State government has deputed special officer Mr G. Anantharamu to monitor the situation.
Officials are worried over the information that the storm is likely to cross near Kavali on Tuesday night resulting in heavy downpour to the extent of 20 to 40 cms at the time of crossing. All the water bodies such as tanks and reservoirs are full to their brim and further rainfall is certain to result in breaches causing floods not only in coastal areas but also in upland areas, according to irrigation officials.
Adding to the worry of the administration, the district received an average rainfall of 46.2 mm (4.6 cm) during last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday. Sullurpeta has recorded highest rainfall of 17 cms till Tuesday evening and the rainfall is more or less same in coastal mandals in Gudur division.
Meanwhile, three farmers succumbed to cold wave caused due to depression in the Bay of Bengal in Nellore district on Tuesday. Manda Peddapullaiah, 58, a farmer of Chintalapalem in Kasumuru Panchayat of Venkatachalam mandal collapsed while he was working in his agriculture field and he breathed his last before locals rushed him to his residence. Also, Venkat-aramanaiah, 57, of Gamallapalem in TP Gudur mandal and a fisherman, Vajjamgari Ramalingaiah, 55, of Muttalathopu village in Kodur panchayat succumbed to cold wave.
District collector Mr K. Ramgopal conducted a teleconference with officials of all mandals and instructed the special officers posted to 12 coastal mandals to take steps to evacuate people living in low-lying areas wherever necessary.
Caution flag number 3 was hoisted in Krishnapatnam port and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea. According to the collector, northeast monsoon has brought 792 mm as against normal rainfall of 576 mm from October till date. This has resulted in 23.1 percent excess rainfall.
He said that the storm is likely to cross the coast near Kavali on Tuesday night or before dawn on Wednesday.
A control room has been set-up in the collectorate and people can contact 0861-2331263 or 2331477 in case of emergency.
Superintendent of police Mr E. Damodar directed the police to keep a watch on the low-lying culverts and prevent people and motorists from entering them in case of overflow.
Meanwhile special officer Mr G. Anantaramu reviewed the situation with district collector and SP soon after his arrival at about 8 pm on Tuesday night.
