By R Haldorai WITH the Coimbatore Plastic Manufacturers and Merchants Association obtaining a stay in the High Court against the ban on the use of plastics, Coimbatore Corporation has stopped raiding shops, seizing and slapping fine on sellers and users for the past two weeks. The use of plastic carrybags has since increased in every nook and corner of the city. Many councillors, who were not aware of the stay, raised doubts blaming the corporation health wing officials for being inactive. P Nachimuthu, chairman, Corporation Heath Committee, told 'Express: "A committee, comprising Mayor R Venkatachalam and councillors, which was formed to monitor the implementation of the ban, was not apprised of the stay immediately by the officials. The councillors could learn about the stay only on Tuesday and some councillors broached the subject demanding explanation for being lethargic in seizing plastics. When contacted, City Health Officer (CHO) Dr Thanaraj, who is the authority for implementing the plastic ban, said the Plastic Manufactur ers and Merchants Association had obtained the stay on May 25. "After receiving the copy of the interim stay, we stopped raiding shops, seizing plastics and slapping fine on the sellers and users. We have taken steps to vacate the stay with the help of corporation lawyers. Once the stay is vacated, the officials will vigorously embark on the job of seizing banned plastic items', the CHO said. Most councillors feel that the stay is a hurdle for speedy implementation of Solid Waste Management (SWM) and Underground Drainage (UGD) schemes.
