Navanagar, the Chandigarh of Bagalkot district of Karnataka in terms of its exquisite planning, will soon have an added attraction - a mini forest atop a hillock. The dream project of district Deputy Commissioner K S Prabhakar, the hillock housing the Mini Vidhana Soudha will soon be cloaked in green. Vigorous work is on to dig 21 percolation pits to store rain water to nurture 2,000 trees that will be planted on the hillock. To protect the soil, 60,000 cacti would also be grown. This is, perhaps, the first government-sponsored project of its kind in the State. To encourage people to adopt rain harvesting techniques, a model is being set up at a cost of Rs 16 lakh, where necessary guidance and information will be provided.
