The number of people in Asia infected with HIV could jump by more than 150 per cent, or 8 million, by 2020 unless more is done to combat the spread of the virus that causes AIDS, a report presented to the UN secretary-general said on Wednesday. That increase could be kept to 3 million if a response programme is adopted immediately, according to the report from The Commission on AIDS in Asia, which called for more involvement from political leaders, greater resources and stronger prevention programs to quell the epidemic. Nearly 5 million people are infected with HIV in Asia now, with 440,000 dying annually, the report said. The annual death toll will rise to almost 500,000 by 2020 without a scaled-up response, according to the report, entitled
