The newly elected BJP Government in Karnataka will face its first major crisis in resolving the sensitive Hogenakkal issue with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi announcing the revival of the controversial drinking water project in the Cauvery basin. The two neighbouring states went on the offensive after the Chief Minister-elect BS Yeddyurappa visited Hogenakkal last March and protested against the implementation of the drinking water project to cater to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts in Tamil Nadu. The tempers cooled only after Karunanidhi announced that the Rs 1,334-crore project would be kept on hold till the newly elected Government took office in Karnataka. With the new BJP Government in office, Karunanidhi announced last week that Tamil Nadu would go ahead with the project as per schedule. Yeddyurappa said in Delhi on Monday that every effort would be made to safeguard the interests of Karnataka. According to a report, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who played a crucial role in strategizing his party's victory in Karnataka in the Assembly polls, has been approached by the state BJP leadership to advise Karnataka Government in dealing with the Hogenakkal project. The report said Jaitley would be asked to give advice at the political level, whereas the routine issues before the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal would be handled by the state's legal team. Yeddyurappa plans to convene an all-party meeting after his Government wins the vote of confidence in the Assembly during this week. The handling of the tricky Hogenakkal issue in the coming days would decide whether Yeddyurappa could rise above narrow political considerations. If Yeddyurappa deals the issue with tact, he could even build bridges with the DMK which has always been suspicious of the north-India centered BJP.
