The recent launch of new refrigerator models in India based on eco-friendly technology shows that Indian companies have finally begun taking some notice of the harm being done to be environment by the rampant use of chemicals and non-biodegradable materials. The sustained release of chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) has been eating away the vital ozone layer of the atmosphere: the hole blows into the sky, according to latest estimates is as large as North america. What can the Indian government do ? Apart from discouraging the indiscriminate use of CFC-generating air-conditioners and banningaerosol sprays, the government can reward manufacturers and buyers of eco-friendly appliances with special tax and other incentives. And as is being done in the case of old vehicles, antiquated and untreated products can be phased out slowly , to be replaced with environment-safe items.
