Hoolock Gibbon conservation workshop today

GUWAHATI, Nov 12: The Northeastern Regional Cell of the Centre for Environmental Education (CEE) is organizing a stakeholder workshop cum strategy discussion meet on the conservation of Hoolock Gibbons in the North-eastern States on November 13, 2009 at Shilpgram in Guwahati. A press release stated that schedule I endangered species, the Hoolock gibbon is the only ape species found in the entire Indian subcontinent.
However, the ape is facing serious threat of extinction due to habitat loss, poaching for its meat and use in ornamentation, traditional medicine and religious ceremonies. The workshop will, therefore, include discussion on the current scenario of Hoolock Gibbon conservation in the Northeast by primate experts like Dr Jihosuo Bishwas of Primate Research Centre, Dr Dilip Chetry of Gibbon Conservation Centre and many others.
