ROURKELA: The parched Sundargarh district, which was heading for a deeper water crisis, heaved a sigh of relief after a good spell of rain last night and this morning.
Except the district headquarters town of Sundargarh, other parts of the district reported heavy to moderate rainfall leading to a rise in water level in various natural water bodies.
Rourkela city last night recorded moderate rain which was followed by heavy shower accompanied with thunder this morning bringing down the mercury to 34.6 degree Celsius from 41.4 a day before.
Similar rainfall was also reported from elsewhere including Lahunipara block of Bonai sub-division and the towns of Birmitrapur and Rajgangpur.
Sources said after a weak and erratic monsoon last year the soaring temperature this season had almost rendered all natural water bodies dry leaving the denizens worried for harsher days ahead.
But, two days of rains in catchment areas of rivers Sankh, Koel and Brahmani along with scores of water channels seems to have brought the much needed reprieve.
There was was no respite for Sundargarh town denizens who only experienced drizzle even as water crisis with d rying of river Ib continues unabated. Sundargarh recorded 38 degree Celsius.
Official sources said for the past couple of years the climate in the district has been behaving erratically.
