Door-to-door collection of garbage from hotels in the Commercial Capital by a private agency will begin on a trial basis for 10-15 days only from Wednesday The agency, Municipal Waste Collection Committee, on Monday had a meeting with the Chief Officer Y B Tawde and Chairperson Johnson Fernandes, wherein the civic body agreed upon to make available one municipal truck, driver and labourers to the agency to lift garbage from the city hotels. The Chief Officer is believed to have rejected the proposal for payment of money to the agency. Incidentally, though the agency was initially inclined to collect hospital waste from the city's nursing homes and hospitals, the proposal was dropped for want of suitable place for disposal. The question of where to dispose off the hospital waste came in for sharp focus as the monsoons are fast approaching and it was not advisable to dump or bury the bio-medical waste at the Sonsodo yard. Meanwhile, the President of the South Goa Hotels Owners Association C P Jaggi has called an emergency meeting of the hotel owners to discuss the garbage collection rates mooted by the private agency. Jagi told Herald that the rates fixed for small and big hotels, bars and hotels with accommodation are on a higher side and need to be discussed with the owners. The private agency has proposed Rs 300 for small hotels, Rs 600 for big hotels, Rs 1200 for bars and Rs 2400 for big-time hotels. "We will deliberate on the rates before accepting or rejecting them', Jagi told Herald.
