Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy on Sunday directed officials to introduce social audit in the Indiramma housing scheme. He said public vigilance in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme had yielded results. Only Rs 1.5 crore had been defrauded from the Rs 2,000 crore that covers 8,980 villages. The Chief Minister said teams should be set up in 500 mandals in the first phase. He suggested that 15 educated youth be formed into a social audit group which would keep a thorough vigil on the implementation of the mega housing scheme. The Chief Minister said the housing department should furnish data of beneficiaries and other details to the groups, which would ascertain whether any ineligible person has benefited from the scheme. The groups would also check whether payments were made promptly for cement and if there were any irregularities by officials or misuse of power by elected representatives.
