In what is reportedly the biggest raid ever conducted in the capital by the Food and Civil Supplies department, 11,600 bags of rice, each weighing 50 kg, were uncovered from a godown in Alipur. The bags were hoarded by a black marketeer who was pilfering supplies meant for the poor as ration under the Public Distribution System. FIRs have been lodged against six persons but only two have been arrested so far. On Saturday night, acting on a tip-off, an enforcement team of the Food and Civil Supplies department reached a godown in Alipur where rice supplies were reportedly being hoarded by one Ratan Lal. The team arrived to find a truck load of rice being unloaded at the spot. The rice belonged to an authorised contractor identified as Manoj. The enforcement team then found that five more trucks had earlier deposited more stocks of rice at the godown. The raiding teams then barged into the godown and found as many as 11,600 bags of rice. Out of these, 1000 bags even bore the mark of the Food and Civil Supplies department. Department officials said this is the largest ever catch in the country. According to officials, the owner of the godown even had a rice processing plant in the premises at Alipur. His modus operandi was to acquire the stock of rice from the contractor, Manoj, directly. This meant that stocks of rice priced at six and nine rupees, meant for fair price shops meant for the poor, were being siphoned off even before they could reach the shops. The owner of the godown then processed and polished this rice. This rice was then sold in the market at Rs 30 per kg
