A group of village women gave us the greatest lessons in environmental conservation. When a whisper becomes a shout, change is inevitable. The Chipko movement is one such shout. An agitation of rural women in a remote Himalayan village would have never made national headlines. It certainly would never have changed policies. But it did. It has become the conscience of the environmental movement in India and Abroad.
