JAGIROAD - The Jagiroad branch of Assam Science Society observed the World Environment Day on June 5 in the premises of Jagiroad College with a daylong programme, which began with the plantation of saplings in the college campus. An open quiz competition was also organised on the occasion where all the students from local schools and colleges took part. Quizmasters of the open quiz competition, namely Hrishikesh Kalita, Gopi Adhikari, Monoranjan Moulick, Subrata Paul and Achintya Keot, senior lecturers of Jagiroad College conducted the programme where students took part with strong enthusiasm. Deep Shankar Sen of Jagiroad Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jimli Chetia of Jagiroad College and Lakhi Prasad Nath of HPC High School, bagged the first, second and third positions respectively in the quiz competition. A popular talk was also organised on the occasion where Khagen Sharma, senior lecturer of Geography of the college, spoke. In his lecture he opined that all the problems related to degradation of environment has been continuously done by human themselves. Population explosion is the main reason behind these. The things, which we the humans have created and developed for the case of our life, counterattack us in the form of pollution. For example the automatic industries, food processing industries, the chemical industries and various other industries though help us directly or indirectly but they add pollutants to air, water and soil as well. Another major concern is global warming. Deforestation of forestland infused some other problems like human animal conflict, flashflood, etc. If we do not take appropriate measures to minimise these burning issues then one day these will lead to the extinction of human as well as other plant and animal species, he added. Subrata Paul, a senior lecturer in Botany of the college, urged the students to plant and nurture at least one sapling each in their locality so that it can make aware other people also. Pallab Bora, a class-XII student of Jagiroad Kendriya Vidyalaya and Mamoni Das, a class-XII student of Jagiroad College, also spoke on the occasion. They appealed all the student community to take part actively in the plantation process which can prevent air pollution. Earlier, Bhaben Ch Neog, secretary of the branch and a senior lecturer in Mathematics of the college, elaborated the aims, objectives and significance of the World Environment Day in the present-day situation of the degradation of enlivenment and global warming where Munindra Tahbilder, president of the branch and HoD of Geography of the college presided. The meeting was attended by students from various schools of greater Jagiroad area along with college students. The prizes and certificates were also distributed to the winners. The welcome address, prize distribution ceremony and the vote of thanks sessions were conducted by the secretary of the branch. Indus Academy School an affiliated to CBSE situated at the heart of the town here observed World Environment Day. The principal of the institution Prasanta Kumar Bhattacharjee gave a fruitful speech regarding the importance of the World Environment Day.
