Who will now be held responsible? Whose negligence is all this? And will the guilty face the music? GUWAHATI/ TEZPUR/ MANGALDOI: At least 350 girls in Tezpur and 45 in Mangaldoi fell ill after they were given folic acid tablets under a National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme in Sonitpur and Darrang district on Wednesday. The Mangaldoi DC has ordered a magistrate-level inquiry into the incident. Condemning the incident, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has demanded of the State government to find out the manufacturers of the tablets and punish them. Holding the Health Minister responsible for the incident, the AASU has announced a protest programme on Thursday in Gohpur, Tezpur, Dhekiajuli, Sipajhar and other areas from where the cases of poisoning have been reported. The girl students, in the age group of 10 to 18 years, were given the tablets to prevent anaemia under the NRHM scheme, but they complained of stomach-ache, nausea and, in some cases, also vomiting, Sonitpur Joint Director of Health Dr Bharat Baruah said. In Mangaldoi, all the affected students belong to Sipajhar BJ Girls High School. "The girls were administered the tablets on an empty stomach which led to the problem, but this was a temporary condition and not very serious," said Baruah. However, the condition of a few girls has been stated to be serious. Two girls from Tezpur have been shifted to a hospital at Biswanath Chariali, while 18 critically affected students of Sipajhar BJ Girls High School were later admitted to Mangaldoi Civil Hospital. Five of the students have also been referred to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital for better treatment. The issue has created a strong sense of resentment among the people of Mangaldoi, even though the district administration and other senior health department officials immediately rushed to the spot. Sources said that the anti-anaemia tablets were supplied by a Himachal Pradesh-based pharmaceutical firm.
