Tribal people of Kinnaur, Hmachal Pradesh forced Jaypee Karcham Hydro Corporation Limited to stop the construction work on the controversial 7,760-crore 1000-mw Karcham-Wangtoo Hydroelectric Power Project, the largest private venture in hydroelectric power generation on the Sutlej. Hundreds of tribesmen from adjoining villages came out of their houses last evening as well this morning and held a huge demonstration against the coming up of this project simultaneously at Karcham and Wangtoo, the proposed sites of diversion tunnel and power house, respectively.
