Hydropower projects vital for coping with crisis: Prime Minister

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday said the policies of the present government are highly investment friendly and it would welcome foreign investment in hydropower projects. The Prime Minister said this while talking to Vice President China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE) Wang Shaofeng who along with a delegation called on him at Prime Minister House. The Prime Minister said hydropower is very vital to cope with the growing challenge of energy shortages in the country and is also very affordable. The Vice President of the corporation offered 80 percent investment of the cost supplies credit against sovereign guarantee in order to complete the 1100 MW Kohala hydropower project at river Jhelum which is at feasibility design stage by Wapda and the remaining 20 percent would be borne by the government of Pakistan. The Vice President also offered 100 percent investment in 500 MW and above hydropower project on built, operate and transfer basis anywhere in Pakistan. Gilani appreciated the offers made by the Vice President of China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE) and said that government would give due consideration to these offers. The meeting was also attended by Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf, Secretary finance and Secretary BOI and other senior officials. Copyright Associated Press of Pakistan, 2008
