Consumption of soap in the country will significantly increase during the coming weeks since water has become hard owing to large-scale immersion of idols in the water bodies which will hamper the formation of lather with soap. This problem is endemic in nature as the festivals are being celebrated all over the country and the immersion of idols has already stated with Ganesh Utsav. A scientist of MP Pollution Control Board said on condition of anonymity that owing to immersion of idols in the water bodies, density of water increases three-fold which makes the water hard and this prevents formation of lather with soap. He further said that owing to immersion of idols there is alarming reduction in percentage of dissolved oxygen and increase in percentage of dissolved Carbon-di-oxide which is threat to the existence of aquatic life as quality of water deteriorates due to this exercise. The Scientist reasoned that during the next few days bathing would be a futile exercise, as soap will not form lather easily. He further said that immersion of idols is a double-edged weapon, which cuts both ways. It will threaten marine life make bathing difficult and washing of clothes too will take longer time. Hence the increased expenditure on bathing soaps and detergents during next few days, maintained the scientist. Owing to insufficient rains there was no increase in the water level of Upper Lake in comparison to previous year but last nail was dug in its coffin by immersion of more than 5000 idols at Prempura Ghat on Sunday. Scientist of Pollution control Board opined that owing to immersion of idols depth of lake has been reduced and percentage of dissolved oxygen in the water has reduced significantly. Scientist added that owing to idol immersion water retention capacity of the lake is reduced. Scientist further said that presence of suspended particulate matter, oil and Nickel has reached alarming proportions. Owing to alarming decrease in the percentage of dissolved oxygen and increase in percentage of dissolved oil aquatic life's existence is jeopardised.
