Hyderabad, July 22: Illegal abattoirs are causing pollution at Amberpet, New Bhoiguda and Gowlipura localities. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities (GHMC) have claimed that over 700 cases were booked in the last three months and Rs 1.5 lakh fine was collected from the violators.
However, abattoir owners alleged that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation failed to construct modern slaughter houses that will reduce pollution. In fact, the corporation authorities had planned to modernise the slaughter houses at New Bhoiguda, Amberpet, Gowlipura, Ziyaguda and another one in the old city.
According to estimates, each slaughter house would need at least Rs 10 crore for modernisation. "GHMC had proposed modernisation of slaughter houses long ago. They should take up the project immediately instead of delaying it further," said Mr G. Kishan Reddy, the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Himayatnagar constituency.
The chief veterinary officer of GHMC, Dr P. Venkateswara Reddy, said the modernisation process would be implemented very soon. "The engineering department has already prepared a detailed report on the projects. The civic body is going to take up the project very soon," he added. "We are initiating action against illegal slaughter houses and imposing huge fines. We hope the problem will be solved once modernisation is completed," he added.
