Mohali, June 09 We have issued a notice to the illegal occupants and if they fail to vacate the land within two days, we will lodge trespassing cases against them GMADA official Almost a year after Prime Minister Manomohan Singh laid the foundation stone of a proposed integrated Knowledge City in Mohali, state officials were in for a rude shock on Monday when they found that the land was still under cultivation. The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) had acquired 381 acres in Sector 81 in 2007 to set up the Knowledge City. The prime minister had kickstarted the project on September 26, 2006, with the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER). A team of GMADA officials, who visited the place on Monday found that most of the land is still under "illegal cultivation' by farmers, who had been compensated by the GMADA. Acting swiftly against the illegal occupants, the GMADA enforcement staff ploughed almost 15 acres of the illegally cultivated land and asked the rest of the illegal occupants to clear the land within two days. They said legal action will be taken against them if they failed to do so. A senior GMADA official told Newsline that following the completion of all formalities, the team had gone to get a ground report before formally allotting the land to the Central government departments for constructing national education institutes, which will be part of the Knowledge City. "Since it was the first day, we have issued a notice to the illegal occupants and if they failed to vacate the land within two days, we will not only lodge trespassing cases against the encroachers but also destroy their crop. We are planning to hand over the acquired land to the Centre at the earliest,' said the official. He, however, said the cultivation was mainly of fodder.
