Ten villages in Ghatigaon area are notorious for illegal mining. The process of suspension of arms licences of criminals living in the forest area could not be completed in two months. Concern was expressed by authorities in the meeting on April 20 of the district-level taskforce on illegal mining. According to sources, stone in large quantities was found in the pits around Forest Chowki of Danda Khirak some time before. The forest staff destroyed it. The mafia carries the stone in Charai Dang area at night, sources said. Since this area is very sensitive and there is shortage of forest staff, action there is not possible during the night hours. It was decided in the meeting of task force committee that joint action should be taken in the villages of Bustare area including Dancharai, Tilavali, Antari, Danada Khirakh and Surela but no action was witnessed even after two weeks. According to forest department sources then chief conservator of forest had written a letter to Divisional commissioner highlighting many shortcomings. The district-level taskforce was constituted on 20 July 2000. According to rules, 26 meeting of the force should have been held, only three have taken place.
