After a long wait, the district administration has finally cracked the whip against those who have illegally constructed basements in their shops and other unauthorised structures within the city's municipal limits. On the directive of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr R. P. Bhardwaj, the Municipal Council has issued about 100 notices to those who have set up unauthorised basements and illegal structures in its jurisdictional limits. Although such structures are all over the municipal limits, they are more conspicuous in some of the old city areas, including the main market, Sadar Bazar. According to one estimate there are about 50 shops having basements which dot the old city area.
