JORHAT, Sept 25: The illegal selling of Whistling Teals in the open market and arrest of the seller in this connection yesterday has raised concern once again on the safety and protection of wild birds, especially at a time when hordes of migratory birds are scheduled to descend in the region. Nature organizations and the forest department are worried that killing of wild fowl for the purpose of eating and feather may endanger many avian species. For the Last few years wild life orgainzations like SHEWA and PRAKRITI have worked in remote belts to make the peole aware of the importance of birds for preserving the biodiversity. The concerted campaign had yielded results with many areas surrounding water bodies turning from killers to protection. Assistant conservator of forest Gunin Saikia stated that every year the forest department got 4 to 5 complaints in regard to bird offences but this usually started in December after the migratory bird had arrived. Seldom did the capture or killings start at this time he said.
