To ensure livelihood of tribals, says member : The Tamil Nadu government should implement Forest Regulations Act fully to ensure livelihood of tribals, said P.V. Rajagopal, Member, National Land Reforms Council, Government of India. He told presspersons at Gandhigram near here on Thursday that not proper implementation would deny tribal’s rights to live. The right to land for housing was the most essential need tribals. Without proper houses, these poor people often migrated from one place to another. Their children could not get access to basic education. Many government schemes meant for tribals did not reach them, owing to absence of proper residential address, he said. Thousands of tribals, who were earlier displaced because of notification of national parks and wild life sanctuaries, could be rehabilitated only under provisions of FRA only. Process of settlement of forest lands had not been completed. It will be made clear only on recognition of FRA. First, forest rights under FRA should be completed and then only settlement process would be taken up, he said. Over, 70 per cent of people has been depending on agriculture. Shrink in agriculture lands will shoot up unemployment. There should be a ceiling for land holdings meant for plantations. Already, lands offered to many landless were encroached upon by powerful people. The government should identify hidden lands like exempted lands and lands under control of temples and give the same to landless people, he insisted.
