Bhawani Saur, a Gond widow of Baissa village in Tikamgarh, was preparing for her daughter's wedding next week. So, when a request came from officials for her to make a meal for 20, she was totally unprepared. When the guests arrived at 9pm on Tuesday, the chief among them was none other than Rahul Gandhi this time on a hush-hush tour of Bundelkhand, going native and pressing flesh with tribals and Dalits. The Youth Congress president and AICC general secretary was accompanied by fellow babalog, Sachin Pilot and Uttar Pradesh PCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi. And, of course, there were several SPG men in tow. Villagers were told late on Tuesday that a team of important officials from Bhopal was headed their way. An hour and a half later, a fleet of vehicles zoomed into this Gond tribal village, about 30-km from the district headquarters. A local NGO had approached Bhawani Saur a few days ago and asked her if she could cook a meal for 20 officers who would come to visit the village. She pleaded that she had her daughter's wedding to prepare for and had no money for a feast. Her husband, Ghanshyam, died 22 years ago and she had assiduously saved for Kamala's wedding. The NGO gave her Rs 700 to buy vegetables, flour, edible oil and fuel. The hostess then rustled up a meal of pooris and vegetable curry and served her guests on pattals (plates made from dried leaves). She even managed to get a few bottles of mineral water. Shortly after dinner, the villagers gathered at the chaupal, where Rahul Gandhi sat speaking to tribals about the employment guarantee scheme. He asked whether villagers were getting work under the scheme and whether they were happy with the implementation. By now, word had got around and people from surrounding villages rushed in to catch a glimpse of Rahul and tried to push their way in through the SPG cordon. But the orders were clear: No one was to go out of the village and no one was to come in until Rahul left. After the chaupal, Rahul slept on a charpoy in the house of another tribal, Khuman Rajak. A new mattress was laid. The high-powered entourage drove off at 6am on Wednesday. Like during his recent visit to UP villages, Rahul's itinerary in Bundelkhand was not disclosed even to local police and the state Congress did not know details. Locals complained that SPG men took away mobile phones from even top police officers. Before reaching Baissa, Rahul Gandhi was in Hotel Fort View in Tikamgarh where a wedding reception was under way. Unable to seal off the hotel, SPG took away mobile phones from hotel staff, guests and the just-married couple, citing security reasons. Late Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi took off towards Chhattarpur district, where party sources said, he could visit Goira village and meet the family of a backward class woman who had committed suicide after being unable to pay a huge electricity bill. Some said he would also visit Khajuraho, yet no one was sure. But Baissa is thrilled with the visit. Aware of the political squabble between Mayawati and the UP Congress over Rahul Gandhi's night halt in a Dalit home in UP, the village now expects another high-profile visitor soon.
