Dirty and unsafe water is being supplied to citizens of Kurnool city. But the municipal authorities are content with an explanation for the reason without taking any measures for the purification of stagnant tank water. Despite opposition corporators raising the issue and expressing concern at the authorities over supply of poor quality water in the recent council meeting, the authorities merely told members that the reason lay in the lower levels of the supply water tank but gave no assurance of addressing the problem. Thousands of town residents are expressing their ire at the corporation authorities for being complacent on an issue of such importance. They contend that while the moneyed class can afford to purchase mineral or purified water from private agencies, common people have no option but to drink dirty water and become vulnerable to waterborne diseases. In March 2008, unseasonal rains brought abundance of water to the district, so much so that the authorities were compelled to lift the crest gates of the Sunkesula barrage and release water. Local people are sore at the municipal corporation authorities for failing to take steps to fill the city reservoirs with fresh water.
