IMR down in State

BHUBANESWAR: The State has been able to bring down the infant mortality rate (IMR) by 20 points as against 15 points at the national level. A review on the performance of the IMR Mission by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here today revealed that IMR rate, which was 93 per 1,000 live births in 2001, has come down to 71 per 1,000 live births by 2007. The mother mortality rate (MMR) was 358 per 10,000 live births in 2003. The Governnment has set a target to reduce the MMR to 250 by 2010. Under Nabajyoti Programme, the State Government has trained 12,500 mid-wives to assist women in child birth and nursing of newborns. In 2005-06, the Government launched Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) as part of the IMR mission. Besides, two 63-bed each special newborn care units have been opened in tribal-dominated Koraput and Mayurbhanj districts. Plans are afoot to open more such units in 11 more districts during the current financial year.
