Alappuzha: About 400 residents of a Kerala village have pledged to donate their organs after death.
Two members above 18 years from each family of Veliyambra village in Kerala’s Alappuzha district will hand over consent letters for organ donation at a public function on October 24. A group of young members of a village sports club had initiated the move. Malayalam actor Kailash will attend the function.
Salim K D, one of the youths who motivated villagers, said they woke up after a friend died because he could not afford a kidney transplantation. “Natarajan was from a poor family. Doctors said he would survive only if a kidney was replaced. But, neither his family nor we could collect enough money for the operation. He died after a few months later,” said Salim.
After his death, club members discussed enlisting for organ donation with village elders after which about 200 families agreed to donate their organs after death.
