Agra: Industrial units in the district are consuming excessive quantity of water. On a daily basis, they are taking 18 times more water than the total water requirement of the entire human population of the district. The maximum amount of water is consumed by leather processing and repairing and servicing industries. Mostly, groundwater is being utilized for the purpose. These facts were revealed in a survey on water resources ordered by the agriculture department. Of the 15 development blocks in Agra district, 13 have been declared water scarce. The water resources in these districts are "over exploited and are in a critical condition:, the survey report said. With an aim to providing suitable irrigation to every farm, the agriculture department got the survey conducted regarding water sources, distribution network and water use applications, including all use for drinking, domestic purposes, irrigation and industry. This was done as poor irrigation directly affects crop production. More than 8,000 industrial units of various types and scales are consuming 7.90 billion cubic meters (BCM) of water every day. Out of this, repairing and servicing industries consume 3.47 BCM and leather industry consumes 1.14 BCM. There are 1,168 industrial units in the district associated with processing of leather and 7,179 repairing and servicing units. There are 223 hotels in the district. Together they consume 0.033 BCM, the report said. The present irrigation requirement for agriculture in the district is around 4.1 BCM. Animals require 0.06 BCM. Total human population of the district utilizes 0.44 BCM. According to sources, a large number of industries in the district do not have any water recycling facility. Some of the industries directly discharge poisonous chemical water in drains which finally drain into river Yamuna. Dr. Ram Karan, regional officer of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, said, "Different types of industries have different norms for re-cycling of water. Department is concerned about misuse of water. Guidelines are being issued in this regard which will be properly implemented."
