MIDNAPORE: It seems the Midnapore West district authorities have not taken adequate measures in combating malaria in Belpahari, a high malaria-risk zone in the district. The disease had claimed four lives in 2007, 19 in 2006 and this year four had died of malignant malaria in adjoining Goaltore block. While the Midnapore West Zilla Parishad in its document, Gramonnoyane Paschim Medinipur-2008 released here last month, claimed that 15,000 medicated mosquito nets had been distributed among the residents of Belpahari block, but the Belpahari health department officials had no knowledge of this. Sondapara gram panchayat pradhan Mrs Durga Nayek and her Simulpal counterpart, Mr Nityananda Sabar, who belong to the the most affected areas, said they had been issued merely 100 mosquito nets and similar was the case of eight other GPs in the block. A team of WHO officials visited Belpahari last month following the publication of the news, "Ten ill after consuming anti-malaria medicines' in The Statesman in its issue dated 21 February. SNS
