Two years after the deadly tsunami waves devastated India's vast coastal regions, the country has finally put in place an indigenously developed system that will give warning about tsunami within 20 minutes of its generation following an earthquake. Tests conducted on the system show high-level of accuracy on the eastern and western coasts.
India's east coast is in the vicinity of Andaman-Sumatra trench, which caused the devastating December 26, 2004 tsunami along the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The country's west coast, especially the throbbing economic regions of Kandla port and Mumbai, is vulnerable to tsunami-genic faultline along the Makran coast.
