India may not meet Euro 1 car emission standard

India may not be able to meet the European car emission norm, Euro 1, which will become applicable in 2000 because of the non-availability of high quality diesel. To meet the Euro 1 norm, highquality diesel with sulphur content of 0.05 per cent will be required. However, this may not be possible in the near future as petroleum secretary TS Vijayaraghavan, while speaking at a conference on fuel and vehicular technology recently organised by Association of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, ruled out any allocation of resources in the next five to 10 years for upgradation of refineries to produce low sulphur diesel. This means that Indian diesel engine emission levels will remain dangerously high.
