India provides aid for river project

Ambassador of India to Nepal, Ranjit Rae, today handed over a cheque bearing Rs 374.68 million to Umakant Jha, Minister for Energy and Irrigation, at the latter’s office in Kathmandu.
In a statement, the Embassy of India said the assistance is part of India’s contributions towards construction of embankments along Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamala rivers. The construction is being undertaken in accordance with decisions made at the seventh meeting of India-Nepal Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management. India has been providing assistance to Nepal for strengthening and extension of embankments along Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamla, the statement reads.
The total grant assistance disbursed for embankment construction along these rivers stands at Rs 2917.68 million, according to the statement. It adds that Rs 256.947 million was disbursed in January 2013, RS 97.71 million in July 2012, Rs 345.73 million in October 2011, Rs 545.35 million in March 2011, Rs 599.78 million in 2010, Rs 531.5 million in 2009, and Rs 165.5 million was released in 2008. India remains committed to working closely with Nepal for further cooperation in the field of water resources so that this contributes to the development and prosperity of a close and friendly neighbour, the statement reads.
