For the first time India has featured in the Guinness Book of World Records for planting the maximum number of saplings in a single day. The Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association has set a new record for planting 42,182 indigenous species and fruit trees in a single area within 24 hours. The previous world record for the maximum number of trees planted in a day was held by Fultonvale High School when 293 persons planted 34,083 spruce saplings at the Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area in Alberta, Canada, according to Mrs Geetha Srinivasan, vice-president of the Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association, who was on a visit to Bangalore.
