In a collaborative effort to streamline energy building codes, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)and the Union Power Ministry's Bureau of Energy Efficiency have decided to provide energy conservation building code Tip Sheets and Technology Atlas to those associated with construction sector. These Tip Sheets and Technology Atlas would be distributed to architects, developers, engineers and building energy efficiency professionals to help them improve energy efficiency and to meet India's energy conservation goals. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and J.J. School of Architecture are among 35 institutions and non-profit and government organisations that would receive the five-volume Technology Atlas. The atlas is comprehensive, easy to use manual on energy efficiency in buildings and contains technical information and practical case studies covering lighting, heating, cooling and appliances. The Energy Conservation Building Code Tip Sheets are developed by USAID and provide guidance in implementing Central Government's Energy Conservation Building Code. Besides assisting in the development of 2 courses, one each at the under-graduate and post graduate level, a proposal to provide comprehensive and high quality reference material in the form of a Technology Atlas has been sourced from Colorado, U.S. under the USAID programme. BEE has launched an innovative programme for conservation of energy as well as promoting energy efficient electrical equipment. It has introduced star rating for leading electrical goods depending on their energy efficiency, something that has now caught the attention of the big companies. "At present, this rating is not mandatory but we plan to make it mandatory in the coming time,' a senior BEE official said.
