India, US to push WTO talks

Dubai: In a renewed effort to achieve a global trade deal under Doha Round of multilateral talks, trade ministers of India and the US will meet next week to bridge differences on farm subsidies and opening markets for industrial and agricultural products. "I am meeting USTR (Susan Schwab) on May 6. We are trying to see how we can converge,' commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath said during his recent visit here. Nath said although no date has been fixed for the ministerial meeting, the highest decision-making body of the World Trade Organisation is likely to meet in Geneva next month. "...it is going to happen in the month of May,' he said. India and US, are on opposite sides in the negotiations on Doha Round, which was to conclude by 2004 but did not meet the target due to differences on issues of agriculture subsidies and market access. India,Brazil, China and South Africa has championed the cause of developing nations, US and EU have been trying to get the best deal for rich nations. PTI I am meeting USTR Susan Schwab on May 6.
