More than 10 per cent of the nearly 800,000 diamond and gemstone workers in India are children as young as eight years of age, who work for a pittance polishing and cutting the gems without employment cards or pay slips, according to the Trade Union World.A video casstee produced by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) shows that children as young as six working at dangerous polishing wheels, lining up behind bars with trays to collect their daily quotas of diamonds and straining to see the tiny particles as they sort them out for polishing.
