The Indian High Commissioner to South Africa, Mr. Lakshmi Chand Jain, has been named as the Vice Chairperson of the World Commission on Dams (WCD). The announcement was made in Cape Town yesterday by the Chairperson of the WCD, Professor Kader Asmal, who is South Africa's Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry. The 'Key initiators' of the WCD are, Mr. James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank, and Mr. David McDowell, Director General of the World Conservation Union (IUCN).Prof. Asmal also announced the names of 11 Commissioners, one of whom is the Indian social scientist and founder of the Narmada Bachao Andolan, Ms. Medha Patkar.
