Indo-Bangla border to have floodlights in 5 years

Alarmed by unabated influx from Bangladesh, the high-powered Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has cleared a project to floodlight Indo-Bangladesh border within next five years. The project for floodlighting 2,840 km of the Indo-Bangladesh border is estimated to cost Rs 132.78 crore. The project is likely to be completed by 2011-2012, said Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Radhika V Selvi in reply to a Rajya Sabha reply. The 4,092 km Indo-Bangladesh border highly porous and is considered a nightmare for border guarding force. India has proposed to fence 3,407 km of the international border. According to the Minister, an estimated 2,572 Km of the border has been fenced till February, while another 835 Km remained to be completed. In the Assam sector, fencing out of 224 Km, of which work has been completed in 201 Km, the balance 23 Km is yet to be completed, Selvi disclosed. Bangladesh has borders with West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Meanwhile, 16,231 families Indian families live beyond fencing on Indo-Bangladesh border. The 316 villages are located beyond the fences. West Bengal has the highest number of villages, while in Assam there are 28 such villages. The normal development schemes of the government, which are implemented in villages, also cover the households outside the fence. Meanwhile, the Centre has acknowledged the porous international border is being used for infiltration for anti-national activities. The Government is aware that Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bangladesh borders are being used for infiltration of men and material for anti-national activities. The required of forces for guarding the borders is reviewed by the Government from time to time and appropriate steps are taken in this regard, she added.
