Indonesia fires renew fears of an Environmental Calamity

Government workers handed out cotton surgical masks to passersby Thursday after rain failed to disperse a thick smoky haze above Sumatra Island. Fires have been raging in the jungles for weeks, and many fear that a familiar environmental disaster is about to choke the skies of Southeast Asia once more. But several officials and other say the fears are exaggerated.
