Indonesia said it would try to do a better job of preventing huge forest fires that have often cast a huge pall of smoke pollution over neighbouring countries. Environment Minister Nabiel Makarim said tougher law enforcement had reduced cases of open burning on the island of Sumatra, and at least one Malaysian-owned plantation firm had been convicted of destroying the environment.
