The Indus River System Authority (IRSA), at its meeting held recently, was told that the water presently available in the two major reservoirs - Tarbela and Mangla - was scarcely enough to meet the irrigation needs of the country up to March 31. Officials managing the water resources of the country were hopeful of rain in the catchment areas of the Indus and Jhelum or melting of enough ice in the Himalayan region, a source said. The IRSA, which met in Lahore on Feb 28, after a gap of over two months, alloted water quotas which would be made available to Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan in March. Punjab was allocated 40,000 cusecs of water, while Sindh and Balochistan would get 30,000 cusecs and 2,000 cusecs per day.
