Irrigation for rabi: Govt to install new LIPs

IN a bid to provide irrigation facilities for the rabi crops, the State Government has initiated several measures, including installation of new lift irrigation points (LIPs).
Crop loss during the kharif because of erratic monsoon and the suicide of farmers have prompted the State Government to take precautionary measures.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today reviewed the activities of the Water Resources Department to take stock of the implementation of various ongoing projects. There has been major cost overruns in several ongoing projects because of the delay in their completion.
The revised estimates of Subarnarekha, Lower Indra, Lower Suktel, Kanupur, Telengir and Upper Indravati will be Rs 8,380 crore.
The Baghalati and Manjore irrigation projects will be completed this year while preliminary work on Titlagarh, Lower Indra and Ang projects have been started. Balangir district will get irrigation facilities after completion of these projects.
Besides, 1,434 LIPs have been repaired and 457 new ones installed to supply water during the rabi season. It has been targeted that 81,330 hectares land will be irrigated by the end of 2009-10 financial year. Out of this, 40,000 hectares will be irrigated through large and medium irrigation projects while 11,300 hectares will be provided water through minor irrigation projects (MIPs).
The LIPs will irrigate 30,000 hectares.
Official sources said that permanent restoration works for 2008 floods have been completed.
Besides, work is in full swing for supply of water from Subarnarekha project to Orissa by June this year. Eight more blocks will be provided 35 per cent irrigation potential during the year.
Four new projects, Gohira, Remal, Sunei and Indravati have been brought under the command area development project. Sources said that irrigation facility was provided for 3,71,920 hectares during the nine-year period from 2000-01 to 2008-09.
Implementation of the Orissa Community Tank Management Project was discussed.
More than one lakh hectares will be irrigated under the project through 900 MIPs in 29 districts.
