The BSF firing ranges at Kharkan, 10kms from Hoshiarpur on Una road, are allegedly in violation of Forest Conservation Act, 1980; Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900; and Supreme Court orders. Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) Kharkan has two tupes of firing ranges - long-ranges rifles and two-inch mortars - with a range of about 800 yards. Shelling in these firing ranges has killed stray animals, led to migration of animals and birds and caused forest fires.
